Pick and Roll

Also Called PnR, Ball Screen

A teammate sets a screen on the ball handler's defender, then turns and rolls toward the basket. The ball handler can shoot, drive or pass to the roller, depending on how the defense reacts.

Coaching Tip Screener: sprint to the rim after contact. Ball handler: use the screen shoulder to shoulder so your defender can't slip through.

Pick and Pop

Also Called PnP

Like a pick and roll, but after setting the screen the screener moves away from the basket to an open spot for a jump shot or three. It pulls the screener's defender out of the paint.

Transition

Also Called Fast Break, Break

Backdoor

Also Called Backdoor Cut

A cut behind a defender who is overplaying the passing lane. When the defender reaches for the pass, the cutter goes behind them toward the basket for an easy layup.

Coaching Tip If your defender's hand is in the passing lane, take one step out, then go hard to the rim.

Related Cut · Alley-Oop

Also Called Penetrate and Pitch

A player drives toward the basket to draw extra defenders, then passes out to an open teammate on the perimeter. The defense has to choose between stopping the drive and guarding the shooter.
